Bothwell is a historic village with a special blend of ancient and modern attractions. In 1679 a battle was fought between government forces led by the Duke of Monmouth, the eldest illegitimate son of King Charles the Second and the Covenanters. The Covenanters first formed after the signing of the National Covenant in 1637 during the reign of King Charles the First, declaring allegiance to the crown but maintaining their religious freedom. On succession to the throne King Charles the Second re- instated the Anglican Prayer Book and himself as Head of the Church. This led to a revolt by the Covenanters resulting in many battles culminating in the Battle of Bothwell Bridge which spans the River Clyde.
