Historical Note: 

Whim Square was built in the mid 18th century by Lord Islay, later the 3rd Duke of Argyll as part of a modern farm. He was an enterprising man being one of the original founders of the Royal Bank of Scotland and part of Whim Hall, as well as a great collector of trees and plans and a prominent member of the Scottish government of the time. He was a pioneer among those improving agriculture and the works at Whim Square was one of the first such experiments. It is believed that The Whim estate was also the site for the first porcelain manufacture in Scotland. 

The old woodlands at The Whim are of considerable historical importance. The raised bog still retains a good variety of characteristic species and peatland habitats which have led to an area of 290 acres being designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). 

Location: 

The Whim Estate is located in the outskirts of Lamancha approximately 15 miles south west of Edinburgh. The nearby conservation village of West Linton provides a larger selection of local services including a health centre, bank, post office, restaurant and local shops. Close by there is the famous Whitmuir organic farm with restaurant and the Lamancha Hub with many local classes and events. From the top of the lane from Whim Square there is a daily school bus services to the highly reputed Newlands primary school and Peebles high school which both have an excellent reputation. Alternatively, there is a good bus service to Edinburgh where there a wide range of excellent schools. Other good facilities nearby can be found in Penicuik and Straiton, which includes a Marks and Spencer, Sainsburys and Asda supermarkets. 

The area provides an abundance of country sports including hill walking and mountain biking in the Pentlands and Glentress, salmon fishing on the River Tweed, shooting and a good selection of golf courses nearby as well as cultrural opportunities in West Linton. Directions: 

Heading South from Edinburgh, take the A701 and travel through Penicuik and continue southwards until you reach the Leadburn junction. Turn right at the junction onto the A701 signposted for Moffat. Continue on this road for approximately two miles until you reach a right hand turn down a single track lane with a lodge house at the entrance (shortly after the entrance to Whim Hall Nursing Home). Whim Square is located towards the end of the lane on the right hand side. Parking is opposite the pillared entrance to the square.
