Christmas traditions in Scotland

Couple with funny christmas masks

Do you know Scotland’s Christmas traditions? If not, then keep reading!!!

s1homes’ Christmas competition reached out to Facebook followers to get an insight into Christmas traditions across Scotland, the response was so good, we thought we’d share them with you for a little inspiration this Christmas.

Maybe you think that Christmas is mainly about family, tree decoration and gifts but it’s much more, at least in Scotland.

The kick off for Christmas in every home is decorations, from tremendous trees to a stocking for the mantelpiece, lights, wreaths or even a DIY tree for the wall. Scotland sure is getting into the swing of things already!

Food is also another important tradition, turkey and vegetables are always on offer, but with the chilly days that Scotland has in abundance, hot chocolate with marshmallows is the perfect drink during the Christmas period and champagne of course!

In some homes, the meal starts early in the morning with a brunch or pre-menu trial followed by the main prize – Christmas dinner. And in others homes we have discovered that, despite how cold it is, they’ll still do a BBQ!!

Getting dressed is a must and here in Scotland Christmas jumpers and Christmas hats are popular and new PJ’s are mandatory! And, the ‘newest’ tradition is to do a Jumper Selfie with all the family!

Before opening the presents we love to have fun and spend time with the family, so in some homes they enjoy baking cookies with the children, others prefer singing Christmas carols, and others spend the day playing board games (we’ve heard that in some families, competition is fierce to see who the winner is!) and of course Christmas wouldn’t be the same without watching a Christmas movie with all the family.

Christmas Eve sees little ones welcome Santa and Rudolph, by leaving out some milk  and cookies or mince pies for Santa and carrots for the reindeer, but don’t forget something alcoholic, just for old Saint Nick!

Another amazing tradition is to go to the pantomime on Christmas Eve regardless of age and of course opening all the Christmas presents at the crack of dawn!!!
