Motherwell, Greenock and Arbroath top the charts as Scotland’s most affordable commuter town, according to the research by Bank of Scotland, which looked at houses prices within an hour’s commute of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Results show that buyers could typically save around 30 per cent by commuting 30 minutes from Edinburgh (average house price £225,133) to Livingston and Bathgate (average price £154,038).

Glasgow buyers could save around 28 per cent on the city’s average price of £161,623 by commuting for up to an hour to Perth, Dumfries and Bathgate. Greenock is the most affordable town withing commuting distance of Glasgow, with Motherwell in second place.

However, Aberdeen puts a spin on the results as commuters to places like Stonehaven could pay more than they would to live in the city. Savvy buyers should consider Arbroath, which came our top as the most affordable location for Aberdeen with Keith in second place.
