With pension funds and insurers said to be lining up to plough billions into the UK’s rental market to create American-style rented housing, it could give tenants an alternative to buy-to-let landlords. More importantly, this new American-style rental model is geared to creating genuine communities based around clusters of well-designed high quality housing with on-site 24-hour management and additional social spaces where residents can come together, such as lounges, roof terraces and workspaces. And in Glasgow, with this framework in mind, the former Strathclyde Police Headquarters in Pitt Street, is being developed to house 365 apartments. Designed by Haus architects, the £105million private sector rental scheme will also include an outdoor courtyard garden space. In total, Moda Living is delivering close to 1,000 of these American-style rental homes in Scotland – and a total of 6,000 rental apartments across the UK, backed by Apache Capital Partners. And Moda’s recent partnership with app-based taxi firm Uber gives residents the opportunity to receive up to £100 in Uber credits in return for giving up their car parking space. Moda hopes the offer will entice city dwellers to ditch their cars and free up space for other facilities.
