Annual calendar highlight lets winners shine
The prize-winners were praised for their attention to detail and commitment to clients

A social housing project in Castlemilk has been named Development of the Year at this year’s Herald Property Awards for Scotland in association with SP Energy Networks.

The 130 home community, made up of flats and houses and designed to adapt to the changing needs of residents, was built by Glasgow Housing Association, which is part of Wheatley Group.

It was the second win of the night for the group, which had earlier, along with its Lowther Homes division, seen its redevelopment of the former Govan Tram Depot in Glasgow’s Harvie Street named as Best Regeneration Project.

Calum Miller, Associate Director for new Homes with Rettie & Co, who sponsored the Development of the Year category, praised Glasgow Housing Association for its win, saying: “The standard of entry was incredibly high this year, I’m sure the judges had a lengthy debate in coming to an overall winner.”

And there were words of praise too from Phil Prentice, Chief Officer, Scotland’s Towns Partnership, which sponsored the Best Regeneration Project award. He said: “It was wonderful to be part of such a high profile and positive event showcasing all the best of Scotland’s Property Industry and congratulations to Glasgow Housing Association and Lowther Homes for winning the best regeneration category.”

Other winners on the night included Avant Homes, which won in the Best Show Home and Best Luxury Home categories with its Rosebury and Westbury properties; Westpoint Homes, which was awarded Best Apartment title for its Scholars Court development in Newton Mearns and also lifted the Individual New Build our Small Development title for its Ranfurly View development in Bridge of Weir; and Cala Homes (East) which saw its Melville property at Ravelrig Heights in Balerno named Best Large Family Home and receive a commendation in the Best Show Home category.

There was praise for the winners and for the event from the sponsors of the individual categories: Brian Fulton, Director, Ross & Liddell (Best Luxury Home) said: “The awards ceremony is one of the highlights of the property calendar and was yet again a resounding success.”

Karen Durnian, managing director of Lowther Homes, part of Wheatley Group (Best Apartment), said: “Congratulations to all the winners including our sister organisation, Glasgow Housing Association, which won development of the year for its new-build homes in Castlemilk.”

Paul Alexander, Head of Business Development, Scottish Building Society (Individual New Build or Small Development) said: “We were delighted to support the awards for a second year and were impressed with the standard of entries once again. Congratulations to all the winners and finalists.”

And Jim Mitchell, Operations Director, Daw Kitchens, (Best Large Family Homes) said: “We were delighted to sponsor the award for Best Large Family Home and it is good to see the hard work of CALA Homes (East) being celebrated.” The Herald Property Awards for Scotland is the most important night of the year for the property industry in Scotland and this year was no exception, with hundreds of major industry players attending the event.

They saw Robertson Homes win in the Best Small Family Home category with its Calico property; LBA and Williamstone Farm Steadings being named as Best Renovation/Conversion; River Clyde Homes being commended in the Best Regeneration Project category for its Broomhill development in Greenock and Port of Leith Housing Association win the Affordable Development of the Year category for its Leith Fort project, with Cunninghame Housing Association being commended for Sweeney Street.

Keith Denholm, Director, Allied Surveyors Scotland, which sponsored the Best Small Family Home category said: “Congratulations to Robertson Homes. Allied Surveyors Scotland are proud to be the sponsors of this category which has been highly competitive and highlighted a number of ideas in a highly competitive family home marketplace.”

James McHugh, Director (Banking Division) – Scotland & Northern Ireland, Close Brothers Property Finance, said: “It was a very enjoyable evening with some worthy winners. Well done to all involved.”

And Craig Arthur, Distribution Director, Scotland, SP Energy Networks, said: “It was a pleasure to attend the awards and support the event as Title Partner for this year. The desire to support and promote the organisations and individuals in the Property Sector, the driving force behind these awards, is something which resonates with us at SP Energy Networks. Congratulations to all the winners and finalists at what was a very enjoyable evening.”

SP Energy Networks was also sponsor of the Commercial Project of the Year category, which was won by Morgan McDonnell Architecture Ltd  for The Garment Factory on Ingram Street, Glasgow. Other awards on the evening recognised the people within the industry and PR specialists Perceptive Communicators won the Property Team of the Year category, with Halliday Homes being named Estate Agency of the Year.

Highland Residential Ltd won Residential Sales Team of the Year and Umega Lettings lifted the title for Residential Lettings Team of the Year.

Afterwards, sponsor, Keith Benzie, Associate Director, Space & Time Media, said: “Space & Time would like to congratulate Perceptive Communicators for winning the Property Team of the Year award. This award is testament to their team spirit, their passion for what they do and their ability to craft a compelling award entry. Nicholas Scullion of Scullion LAW, said: “We at Scullion LAW would like to congratulate everyone at Halliday Homes who won Estate Agency of the Year. We had a great time at the event and it was amazing to meet so many like-minded, client-focused people working across the property industry in Scotland.”

It was an excellent achievement winning the award this year and it truly recognises their hard work and efforts over the past 12 months.”

One final accolade given out on the night was the Judges’ Award, which went to City & Country for their transformation of The Playfair at Donaldson’s. Presenting the award, Andrew McFarlane, Chair of the judging panel, described it as “a jewel in our architectural history” and said that City & Country had “breathed new life into an Edinburgh icon”.
