Discovering Marie Delices – a traditional French creperie and tea room in Morningside

Over the next few months we will be sharing some of our favourite local businesses across Scotland.

Today, we popped into Marie Delices in Morningside to chat with the owner, Marie Lafont. Marie told us more about her business and why she chose Morningside as the perfect location.

Can you tell us a little bit about Marie Delices?

It was my dream to open a little French traditional tea room and creperie. When I arrived in Morningside my dream came true. I wanted to create a little place with good, simple and honest homemade food with great attention to detail.  As well as served in a relaxed and authentic atmosphere with regular customers.

When did you open Marie Delices?

I opened the shop on my 28th Birthday,  the 27th  February 2013. So it’s a very symbolic date for me!

Why did you choose Morningside to set up your business?

I wanted to be in a very nice district, a bit outside the city centre to get this small village feel but still not too far from it. A district where there is a real community feel, with local and regular customers living in the area.

What are your favourite things about Morningside?

I really feel part of the local community. It feels like a big family, a real entity… I love it.

What are your favourite places in Morningside to visit when you’re not busy at Marie Delices?

I like all the little independent shops on Morningside Road and The Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill Nature Reserve. I also never miss the The Hermitage Bar Tuesday night pub quiz!

What kind of customers do you have?

Many of our customers are regulars, mostly locals living in Morningside. We have a lot of Mums as we’re in front of South Morningside Primary School and the little children pop in too. Lots of local families and people who are retired and who enjoy coming for a nice treat.

Our customers come to have an enjoyable and relaxing time and a lot of them also pop in to practice their French!

What is your most requested menu item?

It’s a difficult choice! But I would say our Savoury Galettes and Sweet Crepes. We always use imported buckwheat flour from France – very delicious! The Madeleines are also popular but we are now very well known for our Scones! Customers even come to reserve them each day as they go so quickly.

What do your customers say about Morningside?

They always mention about the real sense of community in Morningside. It’s their home and they love it too.
