Packing
Don't underestimate how much stuff you have, packing always takes longer than you'd think. Our packing tips will help you plan in advance and save you valuable time in the lead up to your move.
Make a list of everything you'll need to move.
- A few weeks before the move start collecting boxes for packing (not too big though or they'll be too heavy to lift!) and newspaper or bubble wrap for protecting breakables
- Think about items that you don't want to take to your new home and could be thrown away or given to a charity shop, it's the perfect time for a clear out
- Begin packing non essential items like books, cd's and children's toys in advance.
- Pack a box of essentials for the first night in your new home. Tea, coffee, snacks, cleaning products and toiletries may be required as soon as you move in and you don't want to have to hunt through lots of boxes to find them, so keep that box handy
- Pack heavy items in small boxes if possible to make them easier to lift and try not to pack lots of heavy items in one box, it's best to place heavy items at the bottom and fill with lighter items. This will help avoid both damage to your belongings and personal injury
- Wrap valuables/breakables in bubble wrap or newspaper to avoid breakages and pack them all together. Clearly mark 'fragile' on the boxes (it's also a good idea to check that the removal company insurance or your own contents insurance covers you for breakages)
- Pack one room at a time clearly marking boxes with their contents and which room they have to go to in your new property.
