Lyth is a scattered farming and crofting community and is situated 9 miles from Wick and 13 miles from Thurso.  The Lyth Arts Centre has been open for a number of years and has a small art gallery as well as a varied programme of entertainment such as music, plays and poetry.  The local primary school is in the nearby village of Keiss and secondary education is in Wick to which free transport is provided by the Local Authority.
