s1homes introduces the forth of six blog posts, to find out what it’s like to live in some of the best places across Scotland.

As Aberdeen has grown, Bucksburn has become an integral part of the Granite City. It may sit just four miles from the city centre but this one-time market village was named after the stream that burbles through it – and the area remains surrounded by lovely countryside.

The location means there are plenty of walking opportunities, as well as places for the more adventurous to enjoy mountain biking and horse-riding. Kirkhill Forest and Brimmond Hill Country Park are popular with families for outdoor pursuits. Aberdeen’s long, light summer nights mean a walk along the nearby River Don offers a nice way to unwind at the end of the day. If you’re up for it, you can even walk all the way to Seaton Park, one of Aberdeen’s biggest green spaces.

Dyce train station is only a couple of miles away and the area has a great bus service. The new Western Peripheral Route nearby has also been designed to improve transport links around the area. If you prefer two wheels to four, look out the Lycra because there’s a cycle path to the city that also takes you to Dyce in the other direction. Frequent flyers and holidaymakers, meanwhile, will find the proximity to Aberdeen airport a real bonus.

Sports fans will find everything you’re looking for at the recently refurbished Beacon Sports Centre, located within the Bucksburn Community Campus. There’s a dance studio, a sports hall and a youth drop-in centre so that youngsters can meet their friends. If golf is more your bag, Auchmill course is nearby – thankfully, tartan plus fours are not compulsory!

Bucksburn has several pubs: try the Four Mile Inn, whose resident ghost only adds to the warm and friendly hospitality.

You can also enjoy a range of cafes and restaurants, offering everything from the authentic Turkish menu at Nargile to traditional Sunday roast tucker at The Braided Fig.

There is also an exciting new development coming. Plans for a new AECC concert venue have been approved by Aberdeen City Council. The project, which will include a hotel, will see headline acts performing here. Designed with direct input from the local community, it’s due for completion next year.  So don’t be surprised to see Beyonce out for a jog in your local street!

For family living, there is a secondary school, Bucksburn Academy, a library and a choice of local primary schools.

Although Granite City prices show an increase of 3.4%, prices here have dipped so if you love the idea of a new-build home, Bucksburn is perfect. Properties currently on the market range from an affordable two-bed detached house in the region of £120,000 right up to a modern four-bed semi at £324,000. If traditional stone-built dwellings are more your style, however, the original heart of the village will be right up your street.

Whichever way, if you like to be close to the hustle and bustle of the city but have the quiet countryside on your doorstep, Bucksburn is perfectly placed.
