Six years ago The Cup & Saucer Vintage Tea Room was born out of a lifelong passion for baking and all things vintage.
Almost hidden away in De Courcy’s Arcade in the West End of Glasgow, it is a testament to Samantha and Tony Newell’s passion for the vintage lifestyle – from its mid-century décor to the ambient music.
Samantha is the ‘boss’, though she does admit this is a true family business, involving husband Tony, son Dean, daughter Charlotte and mum Pauline.

Why choose the Arcade in the West End as your location?
Our daughter Miss Lottie Lou had a dressmaking business here so we knew the Arcade and the area very well. We love its ‘village’ feel and the camaraderie of the independent businesses in the West End.
Being on Cresswell Lane, De Courcy’s is just far enough away from the hectic nature of Byres Road to become an oasis for locals and tourists alike.
We like the fact being ‘off the beaten track’ people have to seek us out. When they do find us we love the reaction of surprise and joy as they begin to reminisce over simple pleasures such as tea strainers!
So who do you cater for?
The backbone of our clientele are local regulars. Many have been with us from day one! We invite all of our visitors to leave behind the hustle, bustle, stress and strain of modern-day life, while they sit in the relaxed vintage splendour, enjoying delicious home baking, including vegan and gluten-free options, fresh ground coffee and quality, loose-leaf tea.
Why is Glasgow’s West End so attractive to live in?
The West End is a destiny within a destination city. It has everything thing needed in or on its doorstep – be it entertainment, culture or superb independent businesses.
Ease of access to the city centre via the Clockwork Orange is also a massive bonus.
Is this part of Glasgow as timeless as The Cup & Saucer?
Over the past six years we’ve seen businesses come and go but the area has always managed to keep its eclectic and vibrant feel. There are many organisations and community bodies working hard to raise the West End’s profile and, in particular, protect the aesthetics of Byres Road and the Lanes.
Where do you like to visit when you’re not too busy?
Our favourite places are Ruthven Mews, with its great antique shops, full of delightful vintage knick-knacks. For dining it has to be Café Andaluz or Zizzi, followed by a visit to the Grosvenor Cinema in Ashton Lane.
Finally, what do you recommend for s1homes readers today?
Without doubt my homemade scones – they attract the biggest praise and are often kindly referred to as ‘the best in Glasgow’.
